The hem drops lower behind than in front, which is what lets it hang open over a t-shirt without riding up. The cloth is heavier than a shirt and lighter than a jacket, so it works as the layer in between. Two flap pockets button shut on the chest, the collar is a point, and each cuff closes on its own button.
